Operation Argus

Operation Argus. In 1992, scientists attempted to discover a reliable method of determining 'hoax' circles from 'genuine'. Here, an eager crowd waits while the team, led by Michael Chorost, test the results of the Hoaxing Competition in West Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. Like its unfortunate namesake, Odysseus's blind dog, the American-funded effort died soon after its masters had returned home.

'And in her breast, the messenger, killer of Argus, created lies, deceiving words, a deceitful heart, just as Zeus with his angry mutterings had wished'
- Hesiod, 'Theogony' 79-82
